SHAKIRA’S PINK MET GALA GOWN SPARKS DEBATE OVER THEME INTERPRETATION

A dramatic pink gown worn by global music icon Shakira became a central talking point at this year’s Met Gala, dividing observers over its relationship to the evening’s sartorial theme.

The singer made her entrance in a custom Prabal Gurung creation—a form-fitting, pale pink dress featuring a sheer panel, exaggerated puffed sleeves, and a substantial, textured train. Her styling included soft caramel waves, a diamond necklace, and detailed sheer gloves.

The 2025 Gala’s theme, “Tailored for You,” drew inspiration from a museum exhibition focusing on Black tailoring traditions. Shakira’s voluminous, decidedly couture look led many online commentators to question its connection to the stated brief. Critical reactions ranged from assertions that she “didn’t understand the assignment” to more direct critiques of the outfit’s thematic relevance.

However, a strong contingent of supporters celebrated the look, praising its femininity and dramatic impact. Fans flooded social media with compliments, comparing the singer to a “Barbie queen” and a goddess, and highlighting the overall beauty of the ensemble.

A behind-the-scenes glimpse, shared by fellow attendee Nicole Scherzinger, revealed the gown required last-minute adjustments. A video showed Shakira being sewn into the dress inside a limousine en route to the event, with the singer humorously noting the “suffering” involved in the process.

The contrasting reactions underscore the perennial conversation surrounding the Met Gala, where celebrity fashion choices are scrutinized not just for their artistry, but for their dialogue with—or departure from—the annual thematic directive.
