FUTURE OF SUSSEX CHILDREN’S ROYAL STATUS CAST INTO DOUBT AMID FAMILY RIFT

by Hannah Southwick

The prospect of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children undertaking official duties within the British monarchy appears increasingly remote, according to observers of the royal family. Despite previous suggestions that the couple might leave the door open for Archie and Lilibet to choose a royal life, significant obstacles are seen to stand in their way.

Central to this outlook is the anticipated stance of the Prince of Wales. It is widely believed that when he ascends to the throne, he will not extend formal working royal roles to his nephew and niece. This position is reportedly rooted in the children’s upbringing in the United States, far removed from the traditions and expectations of the British institution. Critics of the idea argue that without being steeped in its customs from a young age, integrating into royal life would be an immense challenge.

The very notion has been met with skepticism. Commentators point to the decisive departure of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from their roles as working members of the family and their subsequent public criticisms. This history, they suggest, makes the idea of their children returning to the fold contradictory. The children are being raised as Americans, with one observer noting they likely have “no understanding” of the monarchy they would theoretically join.

Further complicating the matter is the ongoing issue of royal titles. Reports indicate lingering tension within the family over the use of the style “His/Her Royal Highness” (HRH) by the Sussexes. While they reportedly agreed to cease using them after stepping back, allegations of continued use have caused friction. Some sources suggest that a future monarch might formally revoke the family’s right to these titles, potentially as part of a broader effort to streamline the monarchy and clarify which members are considered working royals.

The underlying message from analysts is one of a closed chapter. The path chosen by Harry and Meghan—leaving the United Kingdom, building a life in California, and publicly detailing their grievances—is viewed as having fundamentally altered the trajectory for their descendants. While the parents may wish to preserve options for their children, the prevailing view among experts is that the institution itself is unlikely to provide them.
