A red carpet moment at the 2024 Met Gala has sparked debate after rapper Cardi B offered a notably vague response when asked about the creator of her dramatic gown. During an interview on the event’s famed steps, the performer was questioned about her voluminous black ensemble. While expressing enthusiasm for the look, she referred to its designer broadly as “this amazing designer” and noted they were “Asian and everything.”
The dress in question was later identified on social media as a custom creation by the Chinese label Windowsen, specifically by designer Sensen Lii. In a detailed post, Lii explained the piece—which reportedly used nearly 3,000 meters of organza—was inspired by the event’s “The Garden of Time” theme, conceptualizing the gown as a representation of fertile black soil from which a single black rose grows.
The exchange drew swift reaction online, with many observers expressing disappointment. Critics suggested that not naming the designer directly, after they had invested significant artistic effort, came across as dismissive. Comments on social media described the oversight as “lowkey insulting,” with one person noting the artist was “simply reduced to ‘This Asian Designer.'” Others, however, argued the incident ultimately brought more attention to the designer’s work, with one supporter writing that the publicity meant “we all know who you are now.”
The Met Gala appearance followed personal revelations from the artist earlier this year. In a recent online broadcast, she indicated she had entered 2024 seeking a “new beginning” and confirmed she was currently single, marking a new chapter in her personal life.
