LOS ANGELES — In a notable departure from his famously relaxed public wardrobe, comedian Adam Sandler has been appearing in tailored suits while promoting his new film. The sartorial shift, he reveals, is a direct result of gentle pressure from his co-star, George Clooney.
The two actors are currently on a press tour for the upcoming Netflix comedy Jay Kelly. At a recent premiere, Sandler was seen in a sharp navy suit, a look that stands in stark contrast to the baggy t-shirts, gym shorts, and sneakers that have become his signature.
Speaking on the red carpet, Sandler explained the motivation behind his polished appearance. “I’m doing this for his sake, because I like Clooney,” he said with a laugh. “He’s a very nice man. When I show up looking the way I normally do, he looks so genuinely hurt that I just think, ‘Alright, fine, I’ll throw a suit on.'”
Sandler’s typical disregard for formal dress codes is well-documented. Earlier this year, he attended the Academy Awards in a hoodie and basketball shorts, a choice that drew humorous commentary from the evening’s host.
His recent coordinated navy outfit with his wife, Jackie, at the premiere was described by Sandler as a fortunate accident. “That was luck,” he remarked. “She knows that stuff. I kinda just land in these clothes and try to remember the right color socks.”
The film Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach, features Clooney in the title role as a renowned actor, with Sandler playing his longtime manager. The project is already generating awards season buzz, having been submitted for consideration in the comedy category at the Golden Globe Awards.
The movie is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in mid-November before beginning its global streaming run on Netflix in early December. For now, audiences can expect to see a more formally attired Adam Sandler at promotional events—a style he admits is worn purely out of respect for his friend and colleague.
