Legendary rock vocalist Ian Gillan has disclosed a significant and irreversible decline in his eyesight, casting serious doubt on the future of his storied performing career. The Deep Purple singer, who celebrated his 80th birthday this year, now retains only approximately 30 percent of his vision.
In a recent conversation, Gillan described the profound challenges posed by his condition, particularly the difficulty of routine tasks. “The hardest thing is working on my laptop,” he explained. “I can’t see anything on the screen unless I use my peripheral vision—I have to look at things sideways to pick up a line of text. You adapt, but it won’t get better. It makes life mysterious.”
Despite the somber health update, Gillan maintained his characteristic wit when reflecting on aging. “It’s hilarious, this growing old thing. It’s a laugh a minute. Well, sometimes yes and sometimes no,” he quipped. “You walk down the road and hear something drop off with a ‘clang’—there’s something else gone. Nothing’s changed really, apart from I can’t pole vault anymore.”
The revelation arrives at a poignant moment for the rock community, which is still mourning the recent loss of another iconic figure, Ozzy Osbourne. Gillan directly addressed the potential end of his time on stage, indicating that the decision hinges on his enduring energy. “I think if I lose my energy I’m going to stop. I don’t want to be an embarrassment to anyone,” he stated. “We’re not far off that. It creeps up on you—you don’t really notice.”
Deep Purple has recently announced a European tour scheduled for the summer of 2026. While Gillan remains committed to a limited number of upcoming performances, his comments strongly suggest that the planned dates could represent the final chapter of his touring life with the band.
Gillan’s situation echoes a broader trend of retirements among rock’s elder statesmen. Just prior to his announcement, David Coverdale, the former Deep Purple and Whitesnake frontman, formally stepped away from performing, telling fans, “It really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement.”
The news has prompted an outpouring of support from fans worldwide, with many expressing gratitude for his decades of music while urging him to prioritize his health and well-being in his remaining years.
