New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was the epicenter of global style on Monday evening as celebrities and designers gathered for the annual Met Gala. This year’s event served as the glittering preview for the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
The exhibition’s curator described the theme as a celebration of historically significant garments—the “Sleeping Beauties” of the title—that are being metaphorically awakened for display. He emphasized fashion’s unique power as an art form deeply connected to human experience. “It carries memory and emotion,” he noted, “and we engage with it through our senses. This exhibition aims to rekindle that sensory appreciation.” The showcase opens to the public on May 7 and will remain on view through early September.
The gala’s red carpet transformed into a parade of breathtaking interpretations of the theme. Co-chair Zendaya made a striking arrival in a dramatic gown from Maison Margiela, while fellow co-chair Bad Bunny complemented the aesthetic in a tailored suit and hat from the same house.
A host of other stars brought their vision to the steps of the museum. Jennifer Lopez captivated in a sheer, silver mermaid gown. Gigi Hadid appeared in an ethereal, flower-adorned white creation, and Mindy Kaling commanded attention in a sculptural nude dress. Sabrina Carpenter chose a bold blue and black ensemble, and Uma Thurman exuded elegance in a soft blue outfit.
The evening saw a mix of romantic and daring fashion statements. Kim Kardashian wore a sheer dress detailed with lace and botanical motifs, while Demi Moore, returning to the gala after five years, arrived in a striking structural gown. Penélope Cruz dazzled in a Chanel bustier dress, and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, co-stars from an upcoming film, attended together.
Other notable appearances included Emily Ratajkowski in a translucent dress, Brie Larson in custom tailoring, and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, who presented a united front. Kris Jenner and her companion coordinated in head-to-toe white.
The event successfully blended high fashion with artistic concept, offering a first look at an exhibition dedicated to the emotional and historical resonance of clothing.
