The mother of the man accused of assassinating conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has stated in court documents that her son underwent a significant personal transformation in the year leading up to the shooting.
According to the filings, Tyler Robinson, who had earned a college scholarship, began adopting more progressive political views, which his mother characterized as a sharp turn to the left, including support for LGBTQ+ rights. This ideological shift reportedly led to arguments within the family, particularly with his father, who held opposing viewpoints.
The documents reveal that Robinson had specifically criticized a planned campus event featuring Kirk, calling it “stupid” and asserting that the commentator “spreads too much hate.” Prosecutors have cited this growing political animosity as a central motive for the alleged attack.
In a critical moment following the shooting, Robinson’s father, a former law enforcement officer, viewed surveillance footage of the suspect and believed it resembled his son. When confronted, Robinson allegedly implied he was responsible for the attack, stating he “couldn’t go to jail” and that he acted because “there is too much evil” and Kirk spread excessive hatred.
Robinson now faces a series of serious charges, including aggravated murder. Prosecutors have announced their intent to seek the death penalty, citing additional charges related to evidence tampering and committing a violent act in the presence of a minor.
The incident occurred on September 10th at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was participating in a public debate. He was shot after taking a question and later pronounced dead.
Following Robinson’s arrest, which came after his father contacted authorities, former President Donald Trump commented on the case. He expressed confidence in the suspect’s guilt and stated his hope that the individual would receive the death penalty upon conviction.
