A DECADE AND A HALF LATER, SEARCH FOR BOY MISSING FROM OREGON SCHOOL CONTINUES

by Nicki Gostin

Fifteen years have passed since a young student vanished from his elementary school in Portland, Oregon, launching the most extensive missing person investigation in the state’s records. The disappearance remains an open and perplexing mystery for authorities and the public.

The incident dates back to a morning in early June 2010. A seven-year-old boy arrived at Skyline Elementary with his stepmother to present his project at a school science fair. A photograph taken that morning, showing him beside his display, would become the final confirmed sighting. His stepmother reported departing the school later that morning, stating she last saw him heading toward his classroom. He was never seen again.

When he did not return home that afternoon, his family alerted the school, which confirmed his absence and notified police. The response escalated rapidly, with the FBI soon joining local and state agencies in a massive ground and aerial search of the surrounding rugged, forested terrain. Despite these efforts, no sign of the child was ever discovered.

Search and rescue experts involved in the case describe unique challenges. The topography near the school is difficult to navigate, and investigative leads have pointed to areas of specific interest. One professional involved in multiple searches noted that cell phone data from persons of interest placed them in remote locations during a critical timeframe, suggesting possible areas for further investigation.

While the trail has grown cold, there is renewed determination behind the scenes. Advocates point to a recent change in local prosecutorial leadership as a potential catalyst for renewed focus. The new district attorney, they note, pledged during his campaign to prioritize the long-stalled case.

The official investigation remains active. Law enforcement continues to appeal to the public for any information, no matter how small it may seem, that could provide answers. A substantial monetary reward is offered for tips that lead to resolving the case and locating the missing boy. For a community and a family, the search for closure continues, fifteen years on.
