The child has been diagnosed with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), a recognized mental health condition. This disorder is characterized by an extreme avoidance or restriction of food intake, often driven by a lack of interest in eating or severe sensitivity to a food’s sensory characteristics, such as its color, texture, or smell. Medical sources note it can lead to significant nutritional deficiency and intense anxiety around mealtimes.
His mother described the daily reality as “overwhelming,” explaining that his diet is severely limited to very specific foods, like plain white rice, which must be meticulously inspected before he will eat it. She recounted the profound frustration of hearing her son say he is starving while he simultaneously refuses any food offered to him, calling every day a challenge.
This disclosure was met with sharp criticism online. Another figure publicly questioned the diagnosis, suggesting it was merely an excuse for picky eating.
