The sprawling saga born from the hit series Yellowstone is set to introduce a fresh narrative thread. Actor Luke Grimes will headline a new series, stepping out of his familiar ranch setting to take on a federal law enforcement role.
Grimes, who portrayed Kayce Dutton for the duration of the original series, will now lead a story that follows his character’s dramatic career shift. After departing the famed Yellowstone Ranch, Kayce Dutton will join an elite tactical unit within the U.S. Marshals Service, leveraging his unique background as both a cowboy and a former Navy SEAL to uphold justice in Montana.
The series, slated for a spring 2026 premiere, will explore the complex dynamics of duty, family, and the personal cost of confronting violence on the frontier. The narrative promises to delve into how Kayce and his new team navigate these pressures.
The cast will feature several new faces alongside familiar ones from the franchise. Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means have been cast as fellow marshals, while Brett Cullen will portray the head of the Montana Marshals office. Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty are confirmed to reprise their roles as Thomas Rainwater and Mo, respectively. Brecken Merrill will also return as Kayce’s son, Tate Dutton.
Notably, the status of several other original characters remains unclear for this particular series. There has been no confirmation regarding the involvement of actors such as Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife, Monica.
Behind the scenes, Spencer Hudnut, known for his work on military drama series, will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Original franchise creator Taylor Sheridan will remain involved as an executive producer, though the extent of his day-to-day involvement is still being determined according to network executives.
The project represents a significant expansion of the television universe that began with the Dutton family saga, redirecting the focus from the ranch’s internal conflicts to a new frontier of law and order.
