A NEW STAGE: EMBRACING THE DISCIPLINE OF OPERA IN MIDLIFE

by BreAnna Bell

The pursuit of a long-held passion is taking center stage for one individual, who has embarked on a full-time academic journey into the world of classical music. After years in the public eye, she is now immersing herself in the rigorous study of opera at a major university’s School of Music.

The decision to return to formal education was driven by a deep-seated curiosity and a desire for foundational knowledge. “I reached a point where I wanted to move beyond a surface-level hobby,” she explained. “I needed to go back to the basics, to truly understand the craft from the ground up.” Now attending classes alongside students decades younger, she describes the experience as both challenging and invigorating. “It’s demanding, certainly, but it’s awakening a part of my mind. There’s a profound energy in dedicated learning.”

This new chapter arrives amidst a full personal life that includes a young family and managing a private farm. Juggling these responsibilities made the commitment significant, but the drive to pursue this artistic path was undeniable. “There’s an incredible sense of empowerment in doing this purely for myself at this stage,” she noted. Her course load includes vocal training, music theory, and literature. She emphasizes the importance of her physical presence in the classroom, where she sheds other roles and identities. “In that space, I am simply a student. I also hope it demonstrates to my children that education is a lifelong endeavor.”

Key to this endeavor, she says, is the unwavering support of her spouse, a celebrated athlete. “Having a true partner makes everything possible,” she shared. “We approach our family and careers as a team. That balance and mutual support is foundational; without it, taking on a challenge like this would be far more difficult.”

Amidst the pressures of public life and the intensity of her new studies, she finds essential respite on her farm, which she describes as a personal refuge. “It is my sanctuary, a place of peace and quiet,” she said. “Caring for the animals and being surrounded by nature provides a crucial grounding effect. It’s particularly meaningful to provide a home for rescued animals—it’s a rewarding counterbalance to everything else.”

Her story underscores a broader narrative about the courage to reinvent oneself and the profound fulfillment found in answering a creative call, regardless of timing or previous life chapters.
