A PRESIDENTIAL CONFESSION: THE NIGHT A PRESIDENT FEARED A STAR ATHLETE MIGHT EMBARRASS THE NATION

by Hannah Southwick

A former U.S. president recently revealed a moment of genuine concern ahead of a high-stakes diplomatic dinner, admitting he was worried a celebrated American athlete might commit a faux pas in front of a visiting monarch.

The incident dates back to 2007, during a state visit by the late Queen Elizabeth II to the White House. Among the distinguished guests was NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. In a recent televised conversation, the athlete recalled the uniquely “stacked” seating arrangement that placed his wife alongside the Queen, legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, and broadcaster Jim Nantz, while he was seated elsewhere.

Addressing the former commander-in-chief directly, the athlete posed the question many might have wondered: “Were you worried I would embarrass the United States in front of the Queen of England?”

The response was immediate and candid. “Yes. Yeah, I was,” the former president confirmed with a laugh. He humorously added that the seating plan was deliberate, partly because he was “worried you were going to dribble on your tux,” and partly to ensure a “beautiful woman” – referring to the athlete’s wife – was at the monarch’s table.

The athlete shared that the formal event was a source of significant anxiety, with even his mother offering a stern, protocol-focused warning: “Don’t pat the queen.” Fortunately, a pre-dinner briefing from the host on proper etiquette—specifically noting that Americans do not bow—helped guide him through the encounter. The former president later commended both the athlete and his wife for handling the situation “beautifully.”

The Queen, who passed away in 2022 after a historic 70-year reign, was remembered by the athlete in a social media tribute as an honor to meet, praising her “unrivaled” loyalty and service. The former president also shared fond memories of his interactions with Her Majesty, recalling the intellect and charm she displayed during their meetings.

The recollection offers a lighthearted glimpse into the unexpected pressures and meticulous planning behind a formal state event, where even a football legend’s manners became a matter of national concern.
