A SURVIVOR’S JOURNEY: RECKONING WITH CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AND FAMILIAL ESTRANGEMENT

by BreAnna Bell

In a powerful and deeply personal account, a young woman has come forward to detail her experience of surviving childhood sexual abuse and the subsequent breakdown of her relationship with her mother.

The individual, now 24, shared her story during a recent podcast interview. She revealed that the abuse began in her youth, prior to her family’s relocation from California to Utah. The perpetrator was her mother’s then-boyfriend, whose inappropriate behavior escalated over time.

“I was already being sexually abused before, and so I didn’t quite get it,” she reflected, noting that the full understanding of the violation came later, around the age of 11 or 12. She described the abuser as “very touchy” and detailed how he used manipulative tactics, such as withholding privileges like riding four-wheelers, to coerce her into compliance. These acts were hidden, and she felt she had no safe outlet to disclose what was happening.

“I felt like I never had that safe place to tell my mom anything,” she stated, highlighting a pre-existing emotional distance. This chasm became an abyss when, at 16, she finally gathered the courage to confront her mother about the abuse on a Halloween night. The response was not one of protection or support, but of denial and accusation.

“The reaction was essentially, ‘You’re lying. That didn’t happen,'” she recounted. Instead of offering safety, she was told she could move out. Consequently, she left home at 16, leading to a lasting and profound estrangement.

Communication with her mother is now minimal, limited largely to major holidays or birthdays. “I think that’s been the hardest thing to come to terms with,” she shared. “I don’t think I’m ever going to have that conversation” needed for reconciliation.

Her story underscores the complex and often isolating aftermath of abuse, particularly when disclosure is met with disbelief from those closest to the survivor. By speaking out, she joins a chorus of voices breaking the silence on trauma, resilience, and the painful paths to healing.
