A moment on the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala has sparked significant online discussion, centering on rapper Cardi B. During a live interview, the artist was asked about the designer of her voluminous black gown but was unable to name the creator, referring to them instead as “this amazing designer” and noting, “They’re Asian and everything.”
The dress in question was a custom creation by the Chinese avant-garde label Windowsen, designed by Sensen Lii. According to the designer’s social media, the piece—which utilized nearly 3,000 meters of organza—was conceived for the event’s “The Garden of Time” theme, symbolizing “vast black soil” from which a single black rose grows.
The exchange prompted a wave of reactions from observers and fashion followers. Many expressed disappointment, suggesting that failing to credit the designer by name undermined the significant work and artistry invested in the custom garment. Comments on social media described the oversight as “insulting” and a reduction of the designer’s effort to a vague geographic descriptor.
Conversely, some supporters framed the incident as an inadvertent spotlight for the designer, arguing that the controversy itself would bring Windowsen greater recognition.
The Met Gala appearance followed personal revelations from the artist earlier this year. In a recent online broadcast, Cardi B indicated she had entered 2024 seeking a “new beginning,” confirming speculation about her relationship status and stating her intention to move forward independently. She was later photographed attending a post-Gala event with Offset, from whom she had previously announced a separation.
