FASHION’S NIGHT OF ENCHANTMENT: THE MET GALA CELEBRATES ‘SLEEPING BEAUTIES’

New York City played host to the annual spectacle of the Met Gala on Monday evening, an event that marks the grand opening of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition. This year’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” served as the creative inspiration for the array of ensembles seen on the iconic steps.

The exhibition at the heart of the celebration features approximately 50 historically significant garments, described by the institute’s curator as the titular “Sleeping Beauties.” In a statement, the curator emphasized fashion’s unique power as an art form deeply connected to human experience. “It carries memory and emotion, and we engage with it through our senses,” the curator noted, expressing hope that the exhibit would reawaken that sensory appreciation.

Opening to the public on Tuesday, the showcase will remain on view through early September.

The gala’s co-chairs helped set a tone of high drama and artistry. One made a striking arrival in a sculptural gown by Maison Margiela, while another co-chair opted for a tailored suit and hat from the same design house.

The red carpet was a parade of memorable styles. Attendees showcased everything from sheer, silver mermaid silhouettes and ethereal white dresses adorned with floral details to bold, structural designs in nude tones. The mood ranged from regal elegance in soft blue ensembles to daring transparency and intricate lacework accented with botanical motifs.

The evening also saw celebrated actors, musicians, and models making powerful statements. Looks included custom couture pieces, sophisticated bustier gowns, and coordinated couple’s attire. For one prominent attendee, the night marked a return to the gala after a five-year absence, celebrated in a dramatic, architecturally inspired creation.

The event, as always, served as a vibrant precursor to the public exhibition, blending fashion, art, and celebrity in a singular cultural moment.
