Two members of the National Guard were injured in a shooting Wednesday afternoon in the nation’s capital, an incident that unfolded near the White House. Authorities have one individual in custody following the attack.
The shooting occurred shortly after 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of 17th and H Streets NW, placing it within close proximity to the presidential residence. Law enforcement, including the Metropolitan Police Department and federal agents, swiftly responded to the scene. The area was secured, and the public was advised to avoid the vicinity.
According to officials, the two service members sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The suspect was also injured during the incident and was taken into custody before being hospitalized. The individual’s condition is reported as stable.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed it is coordinating with local authorities as the investigation continues. The motive behind the shooting remains under active investigation.
Video from the scene showed a significant emergency response, including multiple police vehicles and a helicopter landing on the National Mall. The U.S. Secret Service and other federal law enforcement agencies were also reported to be present.
The President, who was not in Washington at the time of the shooting, issued a message expressing support for the injured personnel and all members of the military and law enforcement.
