A shooting in the nation’s capital on Wednesday afternoon left two members of the National Guard wounded. The incident occurred near the White House, prompting a large-scale law enforcement response.
According to authorities, the shooting took place shortly after 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of 17th and H Streets NW, within close proximity to the presidential residence. The area was immediately secured, and the public was advised to avoid the vicinity.
The two injured service members were transported to local hospitals for treatment. An individual believed to be responsible for the attack was apprehended at the scene and is also receiving medical attention. Officials have stated the suspect’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Multiple federal and local agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, quickly mobilized to the location. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
In a statement addressing the event, the President extended well-wishes to the wounded personnel and commended the efforts of military and law enforcement officials. He confirmed the suspect was in custody and would face consequences.
The President and First Lady were not in Washington, D.C., at the time of the incident, having previously traveled out of the city.
